Martyn’s Law: How schools can use their Phone System to keep students safe

What is Martyn’s Law?

Martyn’s Law, officially called the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, was brought in to improve public safety and is named in memory of Martyn Hett, who tragically lost his life in the Manchester Arena attack in 2017. His mum, Figen Murray, spent years campaigning for stronger protection measures to help keep people safer in the event of a terrorist incident. All those who meet the criteria of the law will need to be compliant by the beginning of 2027.

Why does it matter?

Nobody wants to think about emergencies, but schools have a responsibility to staff, students, and visitors. Martyn’s Law is about giving schools the tools to act fast, whether that is a suspicious package, an intruder, or any other threat. Quick action can save lives and reduce panic.

A simple and instant response system.

One of the easiest ways to respond quickly and safely is by making sure staff can communicate instantly across the school. Some phone systems have a simple alert button, on the top, that can be set up to notify every other phone in the building, simultaneously.

The button can be set up to trigger different alerts with 3 different actions: one short press, one long press or three short presses for a range of uses:

Announce an alert message which can be set up to announce across all phones, in the building, with an on-screen visual message.
Send out a school-wide audible alarm to signal that everyone needs to take immediate action.
Send a silent alert if it is important not to cause a panic.
