Phishing and spam emails have increased and evolved significantly in recent years. They are no longer badly written messages that are easy to spot and send to your Junk box. What is Phishing and why is it so effective?
Phishing and spam emails are designed to trick people into taking an action that benefits the attacker and can result in embarrassment for the recipient at having to inform all their contacts and the inconvenience of changing their passwords. This might be clicking a link, opening an attachment, or sharing login details or sensitive information.
What makes phishing so effective is that the emails often appear genuine. They may look like they have come from a trusted supplier, a well-known brand, a delivery company, or even a colleague or senior manager. Many use urgency to pressure the recipient into acting quickly, warning that an account will be locked, a payment is overdue, or an issue needs immediate attention.
Once a user interacts with the email, the attacker scan gain access to systems, harvest passwords, install malicious software or move through an entire network.
Why phishing and spam are becoming harder to spot
Modern spam and phishing emails are far more sophisticated than many people expect. They often use correct spelling, professional layouts and branding that closely matches real organisations. In some cases, attackers use ‘spoof’ email addresses, so they appear almost identical to genuine ones, making them extremely difficult to spot at first glance.
Many attacks are also specifically targeted. For example, finance teams could receive emails posing as legitimate suppliers requesting urgent payment, or HR teams might receive fake CVs or personal documents. Senior managers have been known to be targeted with attacks which impersonate their details which are designed to put pressure staff into sharing confidential information or, even worse, transferring money.
As a result, even experienced and cautious users can be caught out, particularly during busy times or when working away from the office.
The real impact of that fateful single click
It is very easy to underestimate the damage a phishing email can cause. One single click can give attackers access to company systems or inboxes, allowing them to steal confidential data, monitor communications or send more harmful emails from a real email account.
The worst case scenario of this is that it can lead to financial loss, major disruptions to the business or school, cause data protection issues and damage an organisation’s reputation. In some cases, businesses may not even realise they have been compromised until weeks or months later when the damage is more widespread.
Phishing is becoming so sophisticated, now, that it is no longer is no longer enough to rely totally on staff awareness or basic email filtering so systems need to be equipped with solutions that will detect and block attacks before they can take hold.
